Recently saw this error on a SQL Server that was also hosting the application on the same server.

Solution was to delete a registry key.  This error has also sometimes been seen with dbmail and attachments.

Msg 22004, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

Failed to open loopback connection. Please see event log for more information.

Msg 22004, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

Error log location not found.

This key existed in this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\ConnectTo

I deleted the key “Server Name Removed” and it started working fine.  have no idea where that key came from either.  Thinking it has to be the install process of the vendor, maybe.   It worked the other day fine also.

Just a placeholder in case we ever see it again.
